Text CC analysis

Juliane clearly has high power throughout the whole of the text CC which is a conversation over the phone between her and her friend, Maureen. Her use of interruptions help her asset power while taking away any power that her friend may have over her, which is also a main constraint of the conversation as they are talking over the phone instead of face to face. An example of doing this is by saying 'you're joking' when Maureen explains that she wasn't able to get the tickets. This reduces Maureen's power by belting her friend and using second person speech. By saying 'you're' joking instead of saying something in third person such as; 'this is a joke', it instantly puts the blame onto her friend by making it only her fault by referring to her only. Another main thing that Juliane does to take any power of her friend is by not allowing time for Maureen to give any attempt on an apology which reduces her ability to use any politeness strategies which would make her gain influential power as it would make her more liked and respected by her friend. When Maureen begins her apology with 'sorry, I didn't' she is interrupted by J who simply says 'nothing you could have done'. As result of how simple the sentence she replies with suggests she uses a very blunt tone implying that Maureen isn't as forgiven as she makes out.
